    Our school-age swimming lessons focus on physical, intellectual and personal development. Children establish a lifelong appreciation for safe activity in the water and learn vital survival skills not just for the pool but for rivers, lakes and the ocean.

    Children will learn to:

    • cooperate with and respect others in an aquatic environment;
    • develop and refine swimming strokes;
    • make safe and sensible decisions and solve problems in and around water.

    Swimming program levels

    Description 

    Octopus

    Age range: 5+ years

    Class size: 5:1 

    Suitable for children who:

    • cannot do five metre torpedo and basic freestyle;
    • cannot float and kick on their back for five metres;
    • have not had lessons before.

    What they'll learn:

    • kick on front and back with aid five metres;
    • paddle and kick;
    • push and glide;
    • torpedo three metres;
    • treading water.

    Sardine

    Age range: 5+ years

    Class size: 6:1

    Suitable for children who:

    • can swim five metres independently basic freestyle and backstroke;
    • have had lessons before.

    What they'll learn:

    • backstroke, freestyle and torpedo five metres;
    • duck dive;
    • float, scull and tread water for 30 seconds and signal for help;
    • jump entry into deep water and recover;
    • kick on front with aid and side breathing 10 metres;
    • kick on back 10 metres;
    • seated dive.

    Salmon

    Age range: 5+ years

    Class size: 6:1

    Suitable for children who:

    • can swim seven metres backstroke and kick on back;
    • can swim seven metres freestyle with bi-lateral side breathing;
    • have had lessons before.

    What they'll learn:

    • breaststroke kick with aid five metres;
    • duck dive, swim underwater for three metres and recover object;
    • float, scull and tread water for one minute and signal for help;
    • freestyle and backstroke 12 metres;
    • step in entry and recover;
    • survival backstroke with aid five metres.

    Tuna

    Age range: 5+ years

    Class size: 6:1

    Suitable for children who:

    • can do five metres of breastroke kick;
    • can swim 12 metres freestyle and backstroke.

    What they'll learn:

    • breaststroke kick with breath 12 metres;
    • compact jump;
    • crouch dive;
    • forward somersault;
    • freestyle and backstroke 25 metres;
    • stride entry;
    • survival backstroke 12 metres.

    Dolphin

    Age range: 5+ years

    Class size: 7:1

    Suitable for children who:

    • can perform 15 metres breastroke kick and survival backstroke;
    • can swim 25 metres freestyle and backstroke.

    What they'll learn:

    • dolphin kick 12 metres;
    • feet first surface dive;
    • freestyle and backstroke 50 metres;
    • shallow dive;
    • survival backstroke and breaststroke 25 metres;
    • tumble turn.

    Shark

    Age range: 5+ years

    Class size: 8:1

    Suitable for children who:

    • can do a tumble turn;
    • can swim 25 metres breastroke;
    • can swim 50 metres freestyle and backstroke.

    What they'll learn:

    • butterfly 15 metres and sidestroke 25 metres;
    • clothed swim, flat, scull and tread water for five minutes, remove clothes and swim for five minutes;
    • freestyle and backstroke 100 metres;
    • survival backstroke and breaststroke 50 metres;
    • using combination of strokes 400 meter swim.

      Prices

      The below prices apply across all swimming levels. Payment is taken fortnightly by direct debit, with the total cost spread out across the year.

      Swimming lessons are 30 minutes in length.

      Squad lessons at Brunswick Baths run for either 45, 60, or 75 minutes.

    • How to enrol
      Submit a swimming lessons enquiry and a member of our team will be in touch to start the enrolment process. 
    • Requirements for this program
      • Bring swimwear, towel, goggles (recommended but not required) and dry clothes
      • Photos are allowed in the pool (never in the change room area) – please respect others' privacy and get their consent
    • Safety and handover requirements

      To provide a safe environment for your child please:

      • come to the edge of the pool at the start of the lesson and directly hand over your child to the teacher;
      • watch the lesson;
      • stay within viewing distance of the lesson, with no visual or physical barriers between you and the class;
      • come to the edge of the pool at the end of the lesson and collect your child;
      • if your child is participating in general swimming outside their lesson time and is still under five years of age, you will need to ensure you are in the water with them during this time;
      • for children 10 and older, you'll need to decide if your child needs a direct handover to or collection from the teacher. Base this on their swimming ability and general development.
