Active Moreland is an initiative that has been developed by Moreland City Council to make it easier for more people to be more active more often. The key focus of Active Moreland is to ensure those who are least likely to participate are supported and encouraged to get active. By supporting non traditional participants to participate, it will also have benefits for those who are already participating. There are four key goal areas related to Active Moreland:
- Active people - Targeting people who are least likely to participate and encouraging lifelong participation for better health and wellbeing outcomes
- Active opportunities - Supporting people to access quality opportunities that meet individual need
- Active places - Developing suitable infrastructure to support participation
- Active together – working with others to support the development of and provision of opportunities.
Moreland City Council was successful in obtaining a grant as part of the federal government’s Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI). This initiative is aimed at increasing physical activity and encouraging healthy lifestyle for people not in the paid workforce – particularly those with chronic illnesses related to overweight and obesity. Council has partnered with Merri Community Health Service and Active Moreland Aquatic & Leisure centres to deliver programs and activities designed to improve local health and wellbeing. The Department of Health and Ageing, through the HCI, has contirubuted to the development of activemoreland.com.au.
