Tucked away on a quiet street in Coburg North, the Harold Stevens Athletic Track is a home away from home for many athletes, young and old, from Melbourne’s North.
Situated next to the picturesque Merri Creek Trail, the well-used and much-loved track has recently been updated.
Works included the refurbishment of the running track, installation of a second javelin throwing area, expansion of the high jump area and upgrades to the hammer cage and shot put areas. The facility’s lighting was also upgraded.
Council contributed $670,000, the State Government put in $100,000, and the Coburg Harriers, Coburg Little Athletics, Coburg Amateur Athletics Clubs and the Coburg Athletics Ground Management Committee all contributed $25,000 each to the project.
Moreland Mayor Councillor Samantha Ratnam said she was impressed by the dedication of the clubs to improve their home.
“$25,000 is a lot of money for community organisations and their combined efforts went a long way in improving this important facility.
“The launch of these improvements is a great achievement by all involved and I’m confident it will lead to an increase in participation in this world sport,” Cr Ratnam said.
President of Coburg Little Athletics Club George Pecchiar said the ground was loved by athletes as well as spectators.
“Athletes can always hear the roar of their parents and friends as they run down the straight.
“There is a wonderful feel about the space. It’s our home away from home.”
2016 is an Olympic year so the clubs are looking forward to welcoming new members, inspired by their Olympian heroes, to join them on the track and field.
This year, for the first time, the facility played host to the Northern Metro Region Track and Field Championships on 20 and 21 February.
North-West Ward Councillor John Kavanagh commended the clubs on both their patience and contributions to the project.
“It has been a long process, but the result is magnificent. Congratulations to all involved.”
