On Thursday 17 May, 50 seniors from Active Moreland’s Brunswick, Fawkner and Coburg Aquatic and Leisure centres enjoyed a day trip to Healesville and Gembrook!
The annual tradition is coordinated by staff members from all three sites, and aims to bring seniors together in a relaxing and social environment, where they can enjoy a break, treat themselves and form new friendships.
Departing Moreland at 9 am, the Active Moreland crew made their way through the picturesque Yarra Valley and on to Healesville. Once arriving in Healesville, seniors and Active Moreland staff wandered through the main part of town, taking in the autumn surroundings. Some did some shopping at the local delicatessen and boutique home wear stores. Ample amounts of coffee and tea were had before heading to Gembrook.
Gembrook, a township best known as the terminus for Puffing Billy, houses The Independent- an Argentinian dining hall, bar and beer garden. Here, Active Moreland seniors and staff were treated to a stunning 3 course lunch.
This consisted of:
1) Crumbed Tuna bites and provolone cheese mousse. Coriander and sesame tuna, with avocado for our Gluten free attendees!
2) Crispy chicken, smoked eggplant, palm heart, lettuce + cheddar. Roasted potatoes, onion, garlic and parsley.
3) Rice Pudding with roasted apple, almond and butterscotch
Local and fresh produce mixed in with Argentinian flavours were perfection. “The food was absolutely amazing”, said one senior from Brunswick Baths. “It was lovely getting to know some other nice people from Coburg and Fawkner over a lovely meal”.
As the day drew to a close, the group made their way back to the bus to depart for Melbourne. Once settled in, some napped, while Glenda- the Health and Wellness team leader from Fawkner Leisure Centre- opened a wider discussion about mental health.
Christina from Coburg Leisure Centre told us “It was my first Senior’s Trip on the bus, and it was great! When you plan the next one please let me know!”
The team at Active Moreland would like to thank Alex from the Moreland Bus company for his service, as well as all of our wonderful seniors for a fantastic day. The trip was once again a great success, and demonstrated Active Moreland’s commitment to bringing more seniors together in a relaxing, connected and social environment.
