The Melbourne University Gridiron Club now in Division One, were once a mere collection of Gridiron enthusiasts playing weekly pick-up games. The amalgamation with Melbourne University increased interest and support, allowing the team to embark on their first full season in 2011. After a tumultuous first season, the Royals saw an influx of talent in 2012 as they were crowned Division Two Champions. With a promotion to Division One in 2014, the youthful squad has faced an uphill battle competing against the heavyweights of Gridiron Victoria. With a solid foundation in place, the Royals have their sights firmly set on future success.
Born in 2013, the Melbourne University Chargers are one of Gridiron Victoria’s original women’s teams. The Melbourne University Chargers have concluded their 2014 season and achieved a major milestone by earning their first ever victory! The women's team has grown in numbers and strength along with the rest of the Gridiron Victoria full kit women's competition.
The Melbourne University Gridiron Club Lions Under 19's team is for players ages 15-19. Founded in 2014, the goal of the U19 team is to develop Gridiron in Victoria. With a VicBowl Grand Final victory to conclude their inaugural season in 2014, the Lions have quickly become one of the premier U19 teams in Victoria by also winning the 2015 competition. The U19 team is providing an excellent breeding ground to teach the game to younger players which will provide great value into the men's team. In 2016 both the Under 19s and Women's teams made the Championship game; however unfortunately could not get across the line for a win.
As MUGC has grown we have been able to maintain our culture of a family like environment embracing the motto of "One Club, One Family". It becomes very clear to new people in the club that we live by the motto and support each other on and off the gridiron.
